Glossary
Terms as the DataSuite documentation defines them, each linked to the section it comes from. Where a page and the methodology word a term differently, the methodology page applies. For abbreviations and acronyms, see Abbreviations.
A
Adjusted numerator (N_adj)
N_adj = N_rep + N_rep x (1/C - 1) x k, where N_rep is the raw reported number and C the reporting completeness (proportion of expected reports received) (source)
Admin data
District, region, country; hospitals, health centres, all facilities, private for-profit and non-profit facilities; physicians, nurses/midwives, clinical officers, non-clinician physicians; hospital beds (source)
B
Bottom inequality (marginalization)
The poorest are left behind (source)
C
Completeness of facility death reporting
Completeness of facility reporting = reported iMMR / expected iMMR (source)
Consistent district
Its yearly ratio lies between 1 and 1.5 (source)
Core health professionals per 10,000 (physicians, non-physician clinicians, nurses, midwives)
Thresholds 23 (2006 WHO) and 44.5 (UHC) (source)
D
Data checks
Per district, whether it is missing from, and how often it occurs in, each sheet (source)
Data quality indicators 1a, 1b, 1c
- 1a: monthly facility reports received / total expected reports (12 x number of facilities) (source)
- 1b: districts with at least 90% reporting completeness / total districts (source)
- 1c: districts with no missing values across all forms / total districts (source)
Data quality indicators 2a, 2b
- 2a: monthly values not classified as outliers / total monthly values; 2b: districts with no outliers / total districts (source)
Data quality indicators 3a-3d
- 3a: ANC1 reported / Penta1 reported (expected ratio range); 3b: Penta1 reported / Penta3 reported (based on survey data); 3c and 3d: districts within the expected ratio or range / total districts (source)
Demand satisfied (family planning)
Family planning demand satisfied = use of modern contraceptives / (unmet need + use of modern contraceptives) (source)
Dropout
Children who received the first dose minus those who received the second, divided by the first, as a percentage (source)
E
Expected institutional maternal mortality ratio (expected iMMR)
Expected iMMR = population MMR / (P_i + (M_c/M_i) x (1 - P_i)), with P_i the share of live births in facilities (source)
Extreme outlier
A monthly value more than 5 times the median absolute deviation (MAD) from the median monthly value of the same series (district, or the national or admin-1 series being assessed), the median and MAD being computed from all years except the most recent one (source). In data adjustment it is replaced by the median of the district’s non-outlier months in the same year (source).
H
Health facilities per 10,000 (all tiers, public and private)
Below 2 indicates low infrastructure access (source)
Hospitals per 100,000 population
(source)
I
Immunization denominator (BCG, Penta)
Live births - neonatal deaths (source)
Inpatient beds per 10,000 population
(source)
Institutional mortality (iMMR, iSBR, neonatal deaths before discharge)
IMMR: maternal deaths in facilities per 100,000 facility live births; iSBR: stillbirths per 1,000 facility births; neonatal deaths before discharge per 1,000 facility live births (source)
K
k (k-factor)
The ratio of the volume of services provided by non-reporting facilities to that of reporting facilities (source)
Also defined as: The volume of services in non-reporting facilities relative to reporting ones; 0 assumes they delivered no services, 1 the same volume (source)
Also defined as: The assumed service volume of non-reporting facilities relative to reporting ones (source)
L
Linear inequality
Equidistant differences; coverage rises linearly with household wealth (source)
M
MADM
The median absolute deviation from the median of district coverage within an Admin1 unit, compared with that unit’s coverage (source)
Measles denominators
Measles 1 denominator: live births - neonatal deaths - postneonatal deaths; Measles 2: live births - neonatal deaths - 2 x postneonatal deaths (source)
O
OPD visits per child per year
Adjusted under-5 OPD visits (new and re-visits) / DHIS2 projected under-5 population (source)
Overall data quality score
The mean of indicators 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3c and 3d, computed automatically (source)
Also defined as: The mean of rows 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3c and 3d of the score table (source)
P
Pediatric case fatality rate
Children who die in hospital / total admissions (discharges + deaths) (source)
Percent of subnational units above a target or threshold
How far universal coverage is reached subnationally; the goal is all units meeting the target, and higher means less inequality (source)
Population data
By district and year: growth rate, total population, under-5, under-1, projected live births and total births (census-based), women 15-49 (source)
R
Reporting completeness data
Monthly expected, received and rate for ANC, institutional delivery, vaccinations, OPD and IPD (source)
S
Service coverage
The population who received the service divided by the population who need it (the target population) (source)
Service data 1
BCG, Penta1, Penta3, Measles1, Measles2; OPD total and under-5 (new and re-visits); IPD total and under-5; under-5 and all-age facility deaths (source)
Service data 2
ANC1, first-trimester ANC, ANC4, IPT2, IPT3, IFA90, syphilis and HIV tests, SBA, institutional deliveries and live births, C-sections, low birth weight (<2500 g), PNC within 48 hours, stillbirths (total, fresh, macerated), maternal and neonatal deaths (source)
Service data 3

T
Top inequality (mass deprivation)
The richest are well ahead of all other wealth quintiles (source)
Trajectory
One possible path of coverage over time; each year’s estimate is the middle value across trajectories, with a range leaving out the most extreme ones (source)
Z
